Nederlandse Kooikerhondje History

The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a Dutch breed of working farm dog. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a medium sized, muscular, smooth coated, short-haired, long-eared, two-legged, four-footed, furry mammal with pricked, erect ears, and a short tail. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a herding and draft animal that was originally used as a drover on farms. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is smart and highly trainable, but can also be aggressive towards other dogs, especially if it has been trained to work. The history of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje dates back to the 16th century, when it was first recognized as a distinct breed. The breed was named after the Flemish town of “Koeik”, where the dogs were first seen. The “Kooik” part of the name is thought to be derived from the Dutch word “koek”, meaning “to bark”. The “Kooiker” portion of the name is believed to be derived from the Middle Dutch “kouker”, which means “herding” or “working”. The “Hond”, or “Dog”, part of the “Kooikerhondje” is thought to have originated from the Dutch word “hund”, or “dog”.
