Perro De Presa Canario History
The Perro de Presa Canario, also known as the Canary Dog, is a medium to large-sized, muscular, and solidly constructed, working terrier developed in the Canary Islands. The Perro de Presa Canario was officially recognized in 1959 by the Federación Canaria de Criadores de Animales de Libre Comercio. The origin of the name “Canary” dates back to the 16th century, when Christopher Columbus brought the first Canarios to the Americas. The Canaries are a group of Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located 115 km (70 mi) off the northwest coast of Africa. The Canarians, who developed the Canario, were known for the colorful and distinctive textiles and garments they wove. In 1496, the Spanish invaded the Canarian Islands and renamed the islands Las Islas Canarias or The Canary Isles. The Canarians distinguished themselves by their bravery, loyalty, and tenacity.
