Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen History

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or simply the Petit Basset, is a medium-sized breed of long-haired griffon-type dog originating in France. The Petit Basset is a scent hound, which is a type of hounds used primarily for trailing. Scent hounds are known for their strong tracking abilities, and are also known for their tendency to exhibit “hound-like” behaviors such as baying at the moon. The history of the Petit Bassets is intertwined with that of the larger Griffon Vendeen, which originated in the same region of France. The origin of the name “Petit Basset” is unclear, though it has been speculated that it comes from the Middle Dutch word “paet”, meaning “small”. The Petit Basse was originally developed to hunt rabbits, and it is still commonly used as a hunter of hare. The evolution of the Grand, or Great, Griffon, which eventually became a separate breed, is closely connected to the Petite Basset.
