Plott Hound History
The Plott Hound is a long-legged, medium-sized, smooth-hound hunting dog, developed in the mid-1800s. The Plott Hound comes in three coat varieties: long, wire, and smooth. It is a scent hound, used primarily to hunt wild turkeys, although it can also be used for raccoon, bear, deer, rabbit, and squirrel. The expected lifespan for this breed is 12–15 years. The origin of the name is disputed. It is widely believed that the name comes from the French word poulet, meaning “chicken”, referring to its skill at tracking. Another theory is that it is derived from the Appalachian term “pit”, a brook, stream, or spring, meaning “where the water runs”. The term “plot” is said to be from the Middle English “plough”, which meant “a creek or river”. The dogs that settled the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia would have been the “Plotts”. The Plott Hound is a versatile hunter and courageous companion. The Plott Hound is a wonderful family pet, playful, gentle, and trustworthy. It is a lively, loyal, and affectionate companion. The temperament of a Plott can be somewhat quirky, as it is an independent thinker.
