Podenco Canario History

The Podenco Canario is a medium-to-large sized, short-legged, hound-type of canine. The native Spanish word for “spaniel” is “canino”, which, when spelled backwards, yields “càni”. The origin of the Canario is traced to the Tenerife Island, where it is referred to as the “Mamut”. This name derives from the Spanish word “mamotu”, which means “one who hunts”. The Canarios’ ancestors were the dogs of aboriginal peoples on the Canary Islands, where the dogs were used to hunt rabbit, fox, and hare. The Canario possesses a well-developed sense of smell and is an agile hunter, with a distinctively long, arched neck. The Canarios were used for hunting by the aborigines, and were also used for herding and fighting, and as watchdogs. The Canarios were introduced to mainland Spain by the early 16th century, where they became established as a common sight. The Canario was officially recognized in 1959, and in 1959, the Canario Club of Spain was formed.

Podenco Canario Activity Requirements

Podenco Canarios are a high-energy, high-drive breed of dog that were originally bred to hunt. They are strong and athletic, and they need a good amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation. A Podenco Canario requires around 90 minutes of vigorous activity every day. They will enjoy going on runs, playing outside, and hiking. They also enjoy activities such as agility and flyball. If they don’t have an outlet for their energy, a Podenco Canario can become bored and destructive. They require a very active owner who can provide the amount of physical and mental stimulation they need. Because of this, they are recommended for experienced dog owners only.
