Presa Bulldog History
The Presa Canario, also known as the Canary Mastiff, is a breed of medium-sized (55–65 kg or 121–143 lb) working dog. It is used for guarding, protecting, herding, pulling, and fighting. The Presa Canario is descended from Spanish Fighting Dogs from the island of Tenerife. It is a large, muscular, athletic-looking, and powerful animal. The ancestors of Cão de Canarias were probably brought to Spain by Phoenician traders. From there, these dogs were taken to the Canary Islands. In 1478, a shipwreck occurred in the Western Sahara, which led to the accidental introduction of the Canarios to mainland Africa. The Canarios found immediate favor with Berbers in North Africa, where its large size, strong jaws and fearless temperament made it an ideal guard and livestock guardian. Many early depictions of the Canarios show them being used in this capacity.
