Puginese History

The Pug is a toy-sized, short-haired, flat-faced, wrinkled-nosed, and square-proportioned breed ofdog. The Pug descends from the ancient Chinese “lion-dog”, and is one of the oldest and most popular breeds of pet dog. The Pug is descended from the now-extinct Pekingese, which was the inspiration for Admiral Zheng He’s “Pug Dogs of Foochow”, which, during the late Ming dynasty, were brought to the Iberian Peninsula. The Romans, too, had a dog called Pugnaces, from whence the Latin pugnucius. The Portuguese had a name for the “Dog of China”: Peixe-da-Cina, and the Arabic name for it was, as in Modern Hebrew, פוגניס. The Pug’s massive head, stocky build and big square ears are reminiscent of a wrinkly-skinned human infant. The wrinkles, short nose, and erect, round tail give the Pug a clownish expression.
