Russian Bear History

The Russian Bear is a medium-sized, muscular and athletic working dog. The Russians, who call the dog the “Sherdog”, have a number of legends surrounding the origin of this majestic animal. In one legend, the “Bear” was created when a bear mated with a St. Bernard. This explains the bear-like head, wide chest and front limbs of the “Bear”. The “She-bear” (female) is slightly smaller and lighter in color than the male “Bear”. Another theory suggests that the Russian “Bear” is in fact a Moscow Terrier, which was crossed with a Saint Bernard. This accounts for the variations in sizes, colors and coat types between the two sexes.
