Seppala Siberian Sleddog History

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is an Alaskan husky-type sled dog. It is one of two original types of Alaskan husky, the other being the modern Iditarod racer. The Seppala is lighter and faster than the modern Iditarod racer, but is also less muscular. The Iditarod race is run each year in Alaska and is the most famous long-distance sled dog race in the world. The race is 1,150 km (715 miles) long, starting in Anchorage and ending at the Bering Sea ceremonial start in Nome. The Iditarod was founded as a mail delivery route in 1925, but has since evolved into a long-distance sled dog race. The Iditarod is also known today as a trail race and is watched by over 300,000 people each year. The Iditarod Trail Race is held each March over 1,150 miles from the city of Anchorage to Nome on the Bering Sea coast. The Iditarod has been an important transportation link for the Alaska Native communities of the interior, and the competition that results brings out the best in the dogs. The Iditarod is the world’s longest and roughest sled-dog race. The trail is 1,150 kilometres (715 miles) long, marked with eighty-seven checkpoints, and passes through some of the harshest conditions on earth.
