Shar Tzu History
The Shar Pei (pronounced “Shar-pie”) is a small Chinese breed of dog that is known for its distinctive wrinkles and lion-like mane of hair. The Shar Pei is one of many types of “lion dogs”, a term used to describe any small, wrinkled-coated (or “wrinkled-faced”) Asian dog breed resembling a domesticated variant of the East Asian jungle cat. The Shar-Pei is believed to have originated in China during the Ming Dynasty. The breed’s name is the Mandarin word for “sand skin”, which refers to the loose, wrinkly coat. The Shar-Pei is a robust, muscular, but slightly cobby little dog. The eyes are almond-shaped, and the tail is carried high. The shar pei is very intelligent. The shar pei has a semi-erect, well-muscled body structure, very long legs, and a short, thick coat. The fur is tight, wiry, short, and resistant to water. The head is short and broad, with a rounded skull. The muzzle is strong and square. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The tail is well haired, held erect, and curved over the back.
