Sheltie Shepherd History
The Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is a herding and farm working breed of dog that originated in Scotland. The Sheltie is known for its distinctive curly coat and outgoing, friendly temperament. The ancestors of the modern Shetland Sheepdog are thought to have been brought to the Orkney Islands from Norway by Viking invaders between A.D. 875 and 950. The Shetland sheepdogs were prized for their ability to herd and guard the flocks of “Shetland” cattle that were important for the survival of the isolated islands.

Sheltie Shepherd Activity Requirements
Like many herding breeds, Shelties are high-energy, intelligent, and active. They need a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy. A moderate amount of daily exercise is a must for this breed. They enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities and can run for long periods of time. A brisk walk or hike or a game of fetch will help your Sheltie burn off excess energy. While a fenced-in yard is ideal, your Sheltie can also thrive as a city dog.
