Shiffon History
The Shiffon or Shichon is a mixed-breed or hybrid dog that is a cross between the Bichon Frise and the Shih Tzu. The origin of the Shiffon is unknown, but it may have resulted from breeding two parent bichons or shih tzus together in an attempt to improve the coat or temperament of the standard poodle. The Bichon and Shih Tzu are two different breeds of toy dogs, so the cross between the Shifon and either the Bichon or the Shih Tzu is called a “designer” or “hybrid”. The origin of this cross is not known, but breeders may have developed it in an effort to create a mixed-breed that resembled the frisky, outgoing nature of the bichon with the intelligence, docility, and hypoallergenic, non-shedding coat of the shih tzu, but with a larger body size than the bichon. Despite its status as a relatively new and rare cross, the Shiffon has developed a small but loyal following of owners and fans. It is a medium-sized, playful, intelligent, and affectionate companion that makes a good family pet.
Shiffon Physical Characteristics
The Shih Tzu is a small, medium sized breed of toy dog. The breed originates from China, traditionally bred to be a companion or lapdog. The name “Shih-Tzu” means “lion” or “little lion”. The Shih Tzu has a curly, soft, dense and fine coat that comes in any color. A Shih Tzu’s paws are round and cat-like, and the dog often has prominent eyes. The head is proportionately small, with large ears. The tail is curled over the back, carried on the back, or raised over the back when excited or alert. The legs are bone and dainty.

Shiffon Temperament and Behaviour
The Shiffon is a very sweet, gentle, and docile breed of dog. They are playful, yet also love to relax. They are highly trainable, but are also very independent. They are very friendly with other animals and tend to be somewhat protective of them. They are extremely loyal to their owners, but can sometimes be bossy.
Shiffon Activity Requirements
A relatively new designer dog, the Shichon is a relatively new crossbreed, created by breeding a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. They are small, fluffy, and gentle companions. While they are not very active, they do like to play and will enjoy a daily walk or some indoor playtime. A backyard with a fence is ideal for this breed, as they will want to play outside, but may get lost in the shuffle if left alone in the yard for long periods of time. Because the Shichon is a fairly new crossbreed, there is not a lot of information available on their health traits. They do share a number of health issues with both parent breeds, so it is important to do your research before purchasing or adopting.
