Silkchon History

The Silky Terrier is a toy-sized American terrier that originated with crosses between the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Rat Terrier. The Silky is sometimes referred to as the “Silkie” or “Sleeve”, although this is not its official name. The Silky is a descendant of the Rough-and-Haired (R&H) and Smooth Fox Terrier, and is thought to have originated in the mid-1800s. Early breeders began crossing the R&H and Standard (or “Smooth”) Fox Terrier, mixing the desirable characteristics from both. By 1902, the Wirehaired fox terrier was recognized as its own distinct breed, and the “silky” coat was recognized as a variation of the “smooth” coat.

Silkchon Activity Requirements

Silkcheons are small, fluffy dogs that have a unique appearance. Their coat is part hair and part long, silky fur that gives them a feathery appearance. Because they are so small, Silkchons don’t require a lot of physical activity. They are a good choice for people living in small apartments or for people who lead an active lifestyle. A daily walk is all that’s required to keep your Silkchon healthy and happy. Because they are so smart and loyal, Silkchons are great companions for people of all ages. They are relatively adaptable, and do well in homes with children and other pets.
