Sporting Lucas Terrier History
The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a medium-sized, energetic and agile terrier. The Sporting Lucas Terrier has a harsh, wiry coat that sheds. The ancestors of the Sporting Lucas are thought to have been a mix of the Airedale, the Clumber Spaniel, the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Sealyham, the Skye and the Sussex Spaniel, with some input from the German Wirehaired Pointer. The modern type was established by Captain Alfred Pendlebury in 1884. The Sporting Lucas is one of four varieties of the Manchester Terrier, which includes the Smooth, the Wirehaired, the Longhair and the Soft Coated. The Modern English version of the Hunting and Fielding (H&F) Kennel club was formed in 1889, and in 1891 the Animal Fair Act was passed which allowed any exhibitor at any show to sell any animal, from any source, without penalty. This act also allowed any breeder to advertise any litter of puppies for sale. The Manchester Terrier was successfully promoted as a working gundog. The Breed Standard of the H&F Club in 1891 describes the sporting variety as “very heavy of bone, powerful, and of an agile and active nature.
