Standard Irish Wolf Schnauzer History
The Irish Wolfhound is a sight hound, or “earthdog”, originally bred in Ireland for the purpose of chasing, catching, and (rarely) killing wolves. The wolf-hound was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1887 and the Irish Terrier Club in 1897. The strict “hunting type” standard of the Irish Wolfhound is described in the FCI-standard as “a powerful, well-boned, deep-chested, well-proportioned, agile, and sure-footed, with kind and intelligent expression, long and muscular neck, straight back, projecting croup, and a deep brisket. The coat is typically harsh and wiry, but never too thick, and should extend to the elbows, chest, and belly.”

Standard Irish Wolf Schnauzer Temperament and Behaviour
The Standard Irish Wolf Schnauzer is a very active and alert breed of dog. They are very intelligent, which makes for an easy time when it comes to training and learning. They are loyal to their owners, but need plenty of human companionship and activity. They are known to be brave and protective, so they make excellent watchdogs.
Standard Irish Wolf Schnauzer Activity Requirements
The standard Irish Wolfhound is a large, muscular dog with floppy ears and a reputation for being independent and strong-willed. They are a great companion for an experienced dog owner, although they can be a bit stubborn at times. This large, strong dog requires plenty of exercise and room to move. They need at least two hours of vigorous activity each day. This needs to be rigorous, not just a leisurely stroll through the park. They need to run, hike, or jog in order to stay happy. If you live in an apartment, a Standard Irish Wolfhound may not be the ideal pet for you. However, if you are willing to ensure they get the exercise and space they need, they can be wonderful companions.
