The Standard Wire Haired Schnauzer, or “Wirehair”, is a breed of medium to large-sized working and companion schnauzer. The “Standard” in the name refers to the height at withers of the mature male, which is 61 to 66 centimetres (24 to 26 in). The “Wirehaired” refers to the fact that all of the coat hangs down from the withers. This coat type is also known as “rough”. The Wirehaired Schnauzer is a hardy, intelligent, and loyal Terrier. It is a lively and affectionate family pet, and is a good watchdog. The Wirehaired Schnauzer is an energetic and athletic dog, and does well in shows and obedience trials. The breed standard for the Wirehaired requires that it have “a bold, fearless, and cheerful disposition.”
