Stump Double Cattle Dog History

The Stumpy is an American cattle working breed of herding dog. The Stumpy is a primitive, rustic, and hardy variety of the Border Collie, closely resembling its ancestor, the Rough Collie. The distinctive feature of these dogs is their stumpy tail, which can be in one of two forms: natural bobtail or docked. The stump tail is thought to be an inherited trait, and is characteristic of the larger, taller members of the collie type. While sometimes seen as a fault, the tail is highly valued in the collie world for its use as an instrument of balancing and steering. The rump-tail variety is believed to be the result of breeding with other dogs (probably the Bearded Collie), and is believed to have replaced most of the naturally bobbed tails.
