Swedish Lapphund History

The Swedish Lapphund is a breed of spitz-type hunting dog that originated in northern Sweden. The Swedish Lapphund is closely related to the Norwegian Elkhound, Finnish Spitz, and the Bohemian Forest Hound, and is descended from the same type of ancient Nordic wolf-hunting animal. The Swedish word lapphund literally means “lapdog”, and these dogs were traditionally used to accompany hunters while they hunted reindeer. The Swedish Lapphund is a medium-sized, medium-sized, compact, and sturdy spitz. The head is wedge-shaped, with a well-developed, broad skull. The muzzle is strong and pointed, and the lips meet in a scissors bite. The almond-shaped eyes are dark brown, and the ears are small and triangular. The neck is of medium length and covered with short hair. The chest is deep, and the legs are straight and muscular. The tail is docked to about half its length, and hangs down when the dog is relaxed. The feet are round and compact. The coat is short and dense, and comes in a variety of colours. The Swedish Lapphund is a small, medium-to-large, thick-coated, short-legged herding breed that originated in Sweden. They stand between 15 and 18 inches high at the shoulder and weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. They have a thick, heavy, double-coat that is either all black, all white, or a mixture of black and white. They have wide, erect ears and a dark, almond-shaped, slightly slanted, medium sized, eyes.
