Thai Bangkaew History

The Thai Bangkaew is a rare, medium-sized, long-haired, smooth-coated, working breed of dog from Thailand. The Thai Bangkaew is not a recognised purebred, although breeders are working to standardise the breed. It is descended from dogs brought by Western traders and settlers in the 1800s and crosses with local native hounds. The Thai Bangkaew was first recognised by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) in 2009.

Thai Bangkaew Physical Characteristics

The Thai Bangkaew is a small, medium-large sized breed of dog that generally grows to between 17 and 19.5 inches in height and between 26 and 29.5 pounds in weight. They have a slightly curved, thick tail that is docked so that approximately 3.5 inches of the tail remains. Their head is elongated with a short, pointed muzzle, and oval-shaped, dark colored eyes. Their ears are erect, triangular shaped, and lie close to their heads, and are typically held upright or semi-erect. Their legs are short and muscular, with straight, hard, strong feet. They have a thick, double coat of fur, with the undercoat being long and woolly, and the topcoat being shorter. Their hair is longer on the ears and legs, and is softer, thicker, and longer on the stomach area. Their coat is yellowish-red in color, and is mixed with white, gray, or deep brown. They have a solid, sturdy build, and the males are larger than females. They are intelligent, observant, and alert, and tend to bark at unusual things and people. They are friendly, sociable, and affectionate.
