Toy Poodle History
The Toy Poodle is a toy-sized breed of domestic dog. The Standard and Miniature varieties have been interbred to produce the Tiny Toy, Teacup and Petite. The AKC recognizes 13 coat colors and patterns in the Cockapoo, including white, black, brown, gray, silver, gold, apricot, cream, red, brindle, parti, and merle. The Toy poodle is the smallest of the standard poodles. The origin of the name “toy” is disputed. One theory is that it comes from the French word “tuyau” meaning “tube”, which would have been used to blow air into the ears of the puppies to make them stand up. Another theory suggests that it comes from the now obsolete English “toype” which means “to swell”. Purebred poodles were first developed in France as a water retriever and vermin hunter. The Standard and Miniature varieties were interbred to produce the Tiny Toy, Teacup and Petite.

Toy Poodle Activity Requirements
Toy Poodles are small, elegant, and graceful. They are a popular small dog and companion. They have high energy levels and do best when given regular opportunities to exercise and stretch their legs. A daily walk or an outdoor playtime is a great way for your Toy Poodle to exercise. While they don’t require a lot of exercise, they do benefit from some mental stimulation. A puzzle toy or a game of fetch can help keep them happy, healthy, and active. While they are good in apartments, they do require fairly frequent grooming. It is important to keep their coats clean and brushed to avoid tangles and mats. Some owners opt to bring their Toy Poodle to a professional groomer for monthly or bi-monthly appointments.
