Wire Foxton History

The Wire Fox Terrier is a terrier breed of dog that originated in the 19th century in England. It is descended from the now-extinct smooth-coated Black and Tan Terrier and the rough-coated White English Terrier. The English Kennel Club (EKC) recognized the Wire Fox Terrier as a separate entity from the Smooth Fox Terrier in 1935, and the name for the breed was changed to the Wirehaired Fox Terrier. The AKC officially recognized the Wirehaired and Smooth varieties in 1938. The Wirehaired and Smooth Fox Terriers were traditionally used for fox and vermin control, like their now-extinct ancestors. They probably also hunted rabbit and rat. Today, they are primarily pets, and are also used in show and field trials.
