Wire Pom Terrier History

The Wire-haired Fox Terrier (also known as the “Wire” or “Hound”) is a terrier that originated in the United Kingdom. The Wire-haired Fox Terrier is thought to be one of the oldest of the Fox and Hound breeds. The Wire-haired Fox Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1920. The history of the terrier is unclear. The origin of the name “fox” is believed by some to be attributable to the dogs’ skill at catching foxes because of their keen sense of smell. The “wire” in their name comes from the coat of the 18th-century version of the wirehair, which was wiry and shaggy. The modern-day version, however, bears little resemblance to any fox terrier formerly in existence, save for its size. It is best recognized as a smooth-coated, medium-sized, solidly-built, short-legged dog with a bushy tail.
