Wirehaired Pointing Griffondor History

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffondor (also known as simply the Wirehaired Griffon) is a breed of gundog developed in Belgium. The Belgians’ passion for the development of this pointing-dog is legendary. The first wire-haired griffons were imported from France in 1820 and crossed with the usual griffon-type dogs. This gave rise to the “Belgian Griffon”, and in 1857, the Belgian Kennel Club was formed. The FCI recognised the “Belgian griffon” in 1885 and in 1935, the name was changed to “Wirehaired Pointing Griffon”. In 1946, the FCI split this into the “Rural” and “Urban” varieties.
