Yorktese History
The Yorkshire Terrier is a toy-sized, wire-haired terrier that originated in the United Kingdom. The Yorkies were a favorite of Queen Victoria and were reputedly her go-to lapdog. The dogs were initially bred as ratters and as companions to miners in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were first recognized by the AKC in 1885. Today, the Yorkie remains a popular pet, and is well-known for its small size, temperament, and long coat.

Yorktese Temperament and Behaviour
The Yorkshire Terrier is a friendly and devoted pet that is smart, charming, and fearless. They are energetic, but are content to relax in the home as well. They are playful with older children, but may be too fragile to be with younger children or roughhousing adults. They are loyal to their owners, but may sometimes be stubborn and willful.
Yorktese Activity Requirements
Yorkshire Terriers are small, excitable, and intelligent. They are good with children, as well as with other dogs and animals. While they don’t need a large amount of exercise, they do like to be busy. A daily walk will help your Yorkshire Terrier burn off some energy. Due to their small size, Yorkshire Terriers are good choices for people living in an apartment. However, they do require regular trips to the groomer’s to keep them from shedding too much.
