The American Rat Terrier (A.R.T.) is a small, muscular, terrier breed that is typically 7 to 9 inches in height and weighs between 15 to 22 lbs. They have short, smooth coats in a variety of colors and they have erect triangular ears. Their heads are large and round and they have strong jaws and a black nose. They have a double layer coat, with a coarse, soft undercoat and a smooth, harsh outercoat. They have double dewclaws and sharp, retractable teeth. They are bold and courageous dogs that make good pets.

The American Rat Pinscher is a fearless and determined breed that is always up for a challenge. They are intelligent and quick learners, but can also be stubborn and willful at times. They are incredibly active and energetic, and love to play and explore. They are very loyal and protective of their family and home, and make excellent watchdogs. American Rat Pinschers can be reserved or even aloof with strangers, but are loving and affectionate with those they know and trust.
American Rat Pinscher Activity Requirements
American Rat Pinschers are playful, energetic, and spunky small dogs. They are a terrier breed that is extremely smart and very devoted to their families. While they are not as high-energy as some other terrier breeds, they do need regular exercise and mental stimulation. They are a generally healthy, sturdy, and long-lived dog. However, they are prone to certain health conditions, such as Patellar Luxation, Hypothyroidism, and Legg-Perthes. American Rat Pinschers are well-suited for apartment living. They are fairly inactive and will do just fine living in a smaller space. A weekly or twice-weekly walk will be enough to keep them happy and healthy.
