Berner Chow History

The Bärner chow is a cross-breed between Bernese mountain dogs and Chow Chow. The Berner-Chow was bred by crossing the Bernese Mountain Dogs with the Chows. The Berner-Chow was derived from the traditional Asian spitz type, and was originally developed in the UK. The Bernese mountain dog, while not actually a “Berner-Dog”, is nonetheless closely related. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large working and herding dog breed of the Swiss Alps, used in Switzerland for farm work, herder of cows, and draft horse pulling. The origin of the name “Chow” is disputed. Despite their common ancestry, today the “Berner-chow” and “Bärner-chow” are considered separate breeds. However, they are believed to be the same in terms of temperament, intelligence, and appearance.
