Cairn Australian Shepterrier History

The Cairn Terrier is a type of terrier, a working dog developed in the United Kingdom for hunting. It is named for the Scottish island of Skye, which is known for its rough, rocky terrain. The Cairn Terrier is a medium-sized, smooth-coated, white or red short haired terrier. The Scottish Kennel Club (SKC) recognized the breed in 1885, and The English Kennel Club (E.K.C.) registered it in 1887. The breed descended from the cross between the now extinct White Crested Scotch Terrier (also commonly known as the Skye Terrier) and the now extinct Dandie Dinmont Terrier. The Cairn came into its own in the mid-19th century, when it became the preferred playmate of Queen Victoria, who liked to play with her pets. The popularity of the Cairn rose and fell with the Victorian social scene, but it remains a popular pet today.
