The Cao da Serra de Aires is a medium-sized, long-haired, white and red, Portuguese water dog that is bred to hunt and retrieve waterfowl, and is used in search and rescue, lifeguard and security work, and as police dogs. They have two types of coats – a curly, coarse, waterproof, double coat (docked) and a thick, dense, water-resistant, single layer (undocked). They have small ears and a long tail. They have a shiny, short, dark, wavy or curly red or liver-colored outer coat and a thicker, lighter colored, straight, woolly undercoat. Their front legs, muzzle, and ears are white, and they have brown eyes.
