Carnauzer History
The Carnazeiro is a Portuguese herding and guardian dog, also known as a Fénix guardão (Spanish) and Caniche (French). The origin of the name “Carnazeiro” is unclear. Some suggest that it derives from “carne de sol”, meaning “meat of the sun”, supposedly because of the black color found in the center of its coat, while others believe the name comes from “caranx”, a Celtic word for “bear”.
Carnauzer Physical Characteristics

Carnauzer Temperament and Behaviour
The Carnauzeer is a friendly, intelligent, and obedient breed of dog. They are often described as happy-go-lucky, playful, and mischievous. They are extremely loyal to their families and are considered the “little clowns” of the canine world. They get along well with children, small animals, and other dogs.
Carnauzer Activity Requirements
The Carnouser is a large, strong working dog that originated in Germany. They are still used for herding today, although many have become beloved family pets. Because they were bred to herd, Carnousers need a job in order to be happy. They need to be kept busy during the day with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. This is an ideal breed of dog for people who are active and who have large yards. However, they can be very active in the home as well. They thrive in homes with families that spend a lot of time playing and interacting with their dogs.
