The Cherokee Monarch is a medium sized, short-haired, American hybrid breed of dog created by the crossing the English Foxhound and the American Cocker Spaniel. The ancestors of the modern foxhound are thought to originate from the Middle East or Asia. The foxhound was prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who incorporated it into many of their wars and hunts. The Romans also used the hound to hunt down escaped gladiators. The English hounds were brought to America in the 1600s and 1700s. They played a major role in the settlement and development of the country, as they were extremely useful for hunting and tracking. The first documented use of the word “foxhunt” was in 1610, and the English hounds remained an important part of hunting traditions in America throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The American Cocker Spaniel was originally developed as a bird-hunting gundog. The spaniel was a popular sporting and hunting dog in England and North America during the 18th and 19th centuries. The present day members of the Cherokee Monarch come from a cross between the English Foxhound and the American Cocker Spaniel. The breed was created in 1995 by breeders Terry and Dee Baker. The parents of this litter were BB and Molly, two purebred English Foxhounds and Ammie, a pure-bred American Cocker. The modern day members of the Cherokee Monarch are friendly, affectionate, and intelligent. They tend to be good around children, although care should be taken to supervise small children around
