English Springerman History
The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized, short-haired gundog that originated in the 16th century. The ancestor of the English springer spaniel was the now-extinct Old Spanish Gundog, which likely originated in Spain in the 11th century. The ancestor of the Old Spanish Gundog was the now extinct Bolognese, which is believed to have been descended from the Saluki. During the 18th century, the English used the Spanish Cocker to drive waterfowl towards hunters and retrieve shot birds. In 1859, the Kennel Club recognized the cocker spaniel as its own separate breed. The Kennel Club then banned any spaniel that had a curly coat from championship competition, including the Spanish Cocker. In 1865, a group of breeders broke away from the Kennel Club, and formed the Kennel Union. This group restored the cocker spaniel to its former status. The “English” designation was added to distinguish the breed from the old-style flat-coated retriever.
