Japeke

Dog Breed Profile

Japeke History

The Japake is a Finnish spitz-type of working sheepdog. The origin of the name is unknown, but it is believed that the name is an adaptation of the Swedish word jag, which means “hunter”. The distinct characteristics of the Japake are its white coat and black or dark eyes. The distinctive appearance of the Japake makes it easily distinguishable from other Nordic Spitz-type dogs and lends it the nickname “White Ghost”. The coat of a japike is white with a dense undercoat, and it is trimmed in the traditional way. The head is wedge-shaped, and the eyes are black or dark brown. The tail, when present, is docked to a length of 2.5–4 cm (0.98–1.57 in). The breed can be 89–99 centimetres (35–39 in) tall and weighs 25–30 kilograms (55–66 lb).

The Japeke is an energetic, playful, smart, and protective dog. They are devoted to their families, but may be wary of strangers and may bark when they meet new people. They are active and alert, and make great watchdogs.

Japeke Activity Requirements

The Japeke is a small, sturdy dog that originated in New Zealand. They are intelligent, friendly, and loyal, making them great companions. While they don’t need as much vigorous activity as some other breeds, they do need regular exercise. A daily walk or jog will keep your Japeke healthy and fit. The dense coat of a Japeke requires regular grooming. If kept well-groomed, the coat will not mat, but excess hair will need to be brushed out on a regular basis. A Japeke is an energetic, playful, and affectionate companion. They make good family dogs and do well with older children.
