McNab History
The McNab is a working terrier that originated in Scotland. The McNab is a dog with a fascinating and sometimes tragic past. The Scottish Terrier and the Skye Terrier are thought to be the ancestors of the McNab, and all three are considered to be types of Scotch Terrier. The Scotch Terrier is a very old breed of dogs that originated on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The Scotch was a common sight on Scottish farms during the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in the Highlands. The Scotch was also a popular show dog, and at one time there was even a professional competition called the “Scotch Hound Trial”. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a time when the Celtic breeds were in decline. The McNab was practically extinct, but since the 1980s it has been experiencing a revival. The McNab is no longer rare, but it is still considered a rare and distinctive breed.
