Miniature Schnaupin History

The Miniature Schnaupin is a medium-sized, long-haired, rough-coated, tri-colored pinscher-type breed of working dog. The Miniature Schnaupin is believed to have originated in Switzerland. The Miniature Schnaupin was originally used to hunt foxes, and its name means “little hunter” in German. The popularity of the Miniature Schnaupin waned during the latter half of the 20th century, and the breed almost became extinct. The Kennel Club registered only 30 male and 13 female examples of the breed in 1998. During the 1990s the Miniature Schnaupin was rediscovered and its popularity grew steadily. In 2012 the Kennel Club recorded 1,376 puppies of the species, making it the 226th most popular pedigreed dog in the United Kingdom.
