Pomimo Physical Characteristics

The Pomeranian is a small, medium-to-large sized breed of domestic dog of the Spitz type, and is closely related to the Keeshond and the Samoyed. The breed standard describes the Pom as a “toy-sized spitz”, though it does not exceed 10 lb (4.5 kg) in weight, and its length should not exceed 8 inches (20 cm). It is the most popular toy breed in the United States and one of the most recognizable. The Pomeranian originated in Germany, and is descended from the Scandinavian spitzes and the Finnish lapphunds. Breed standards were developed in Europe as early as the 17th century. The first Pomeranians were brought to the United States by European settlers. The Pomeranians’ name comes from the Slavic po more, meaning “from the sea of mowp”. This refers to the sea that borders the Vistula Lagoon in the Baltic Sea, which once was a swampy area.
