Pont-Audemer Spaniel History
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is a medium-sized French gundog. It was created by breeding the Water Spaniel, the Grey Cocker, the Saint-Simon, the Picardy and the Beauceron together, and it remains a rare and expensive import. The origin of the name is unknown, but some say it comes from the river Aude that flows by the village of Pont-Audemer, others say it comes from the region of Aude that encompasses most of the south-west of France. The breed is supposed to have originally been developed by Jean de la Fontaine, a nobleman who lived in the 17th century. The ancestor of the Audemarles, the French Royal Family’s favourite spaniel, is said to be born under this bloodline. The Audemarles, the Auvergne, the Bourbonnais, and the Bourbonne-les-Bains, all these are names referring to the same illustrious line of spaniels that originated from the humble home of a peasant named Jehan de Pineau.

Pont-Audemer Spaniel Activity Requirements
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel is a working dog that was developed in France to hunt and retrieve. While they don’t require a high-activity lifestyle, they do like to get out and about. While they are high-energy, they are also calm, gentle, and laid-back. While they will enjoy a walk or a game of fetch, they are not a high-energy breed of dog. They are not a good choice for owners who are looking for a jogging companion. A Pont-Audemer Spaniel may not be the best choice for owners who live in an apartment or have limited outdoor space for their dog. While they don’t require a high level of activity, they do need the mental stimulation of a daily walk.
