Sealydale Terrier History
The Sealyham Terrier is a type of terrier that originated as a working farmdog in the borderland between England and Wales. This ancient working terrier is a dog of medium size with lean, hard, muscular body. The modern Sealyham originated in Wales, but its origins can be traced back to the much earlier Welsh Black and Tan and the Welsh White. These dogs were crossed with Scotch and Irish hounds, and the dachshundel to create a more compact, versatile and agile terrier. The Sealyham was a favorite among farmers and herders, as it was a strong, energetic and tenacious working dog. The Sealyham was often used to herd cattle, but it has also been used for hunting foxes, rabbits, badgers and otters.
