Smooth Chisoxy History
The Smooth Coat Chihuahua is a small, short-haired, toy version of the standard long-haired Chi. The smooth coat is generally fawn, black, blue or liver, with a lighter colored face, chest, stomach and legs. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua is considered a separate variety of the Chihuahua. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua is a smaller version of the standard long-haired Chi. Unlike the longhaired variety, the smooth coat does not shed and is easy to maintain. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua is considered a modern development of the Standard Longhair. The smooth-coated version of today’s Chihuahua is a modern development, which is the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation. The Smooth Coat Chihuahua is believed to have originated in the early 1980s when breeders noticed a mutation in the genes for hair length. The gene for long hair did not produce enough protein, causing the hair to be very short.
