Smooth Foxillon History
The Smooth Fox Terrier is a breed of small terrier developed in England, originally for the purpose of hunting foxes. The name “Smooth” refers to the short coat of the fox terrier, and “Fox” is a reference to the fox-like features of the Foxy, the ancestor of the smooth fox terrier. The Smooth Fox Terrier is a sturdy, muscular, and active little dog, noted for its distinctive blue-black tongue, which is visible when the dogs are excited. The Foxy, from which all modern Smooth Fox Terriers are descended, was originally a prick-eared variety of the rough-coated, long-haired then-predecessor of the smooth coated, and shorter haired, present-day version of the Foxy. The Foxy was bred for its suitability for catching and dispatching the numerous and tenacious vermin that plagued English farms, and for the superior speed and agility it displayed in that task. The Foxy was thus ideally suited for becoming a farmyard ratter, a vermin hunter, and a rat-catcher. The Foxy was also known as “the wire-hair”, “the flea-bitten terrier”, and “the ratterman’s terrier”.
