Smooth Toy Foxter History

The Smooth Fox Terrier, also known as the English or British Smooth, is a toy terrier known for being small, smooth, and fox-like. The Smooth Fox Terrier is one of the lesser-known breeds of terrier, and is sometimes referred to as the “Smooth Coated Red” or “Smooth Coated Red and Tan” to differentiate it from the Wire Fox Terrier. The Smooth Fox Terrier is also sometimes called the “English” or “British” version of the American or Coon-hound, due to being descended from a dog imported to England in 1887. The first official standard for the breed, set forth by the Kennel Club of England in 1898, described the Smooth as a “small, compact, short-legged, flat-coated, otter-coloured and tan-coloured, being generally without hair on the ears, eyes, nose, feet, and tail, and also being without the erectile mane found on the American and Australian varieties.” The coat of the Smooth is slightly longer than that of the Wire. The coat is “smooth,” meaning it has no undercoat, and is characteristically red and tan in color.
