Spangold Retriever History
The Spangold Retriever is a medium-sized gundog that was developed in the mid-19th century by crossing English Setters and Irish Setters with Newfoundland dogs. The Spangold has a distinctive golden coat and a black mask on its face. The coat color of the Spangold typically changes with age, and the dog is considered adult after one year of age. The distinctive black mask of the adult can be mistaken for a brindle or tri-colored pattern in younger dogs. The Spangold is an energetic and enthusiastic working retriever, but is otherwise a well-balanced and friendly family companion.
