Spanierd History
The Spanierd is a Dutch breed of herding dog. The ancestors of the modern day Spanierd include various local farm dogs including sheepdogs, cattle dogs and Dutch hounds. The dogs are also known as Brabantse Schapendoes, which means “Schappedoes of Brabant”, and Groenendael, which means “green haired”. The dogs have four toes on each foot, and this is also reflected in the coat color, which ranges from black to brown. The males weigh about 30–45 kg (66–99 lb), while the females are smaller, weighing about 25–35 kg (55–77 lb). The height at the withers is 70–75 cm (28–30 in) for the males, and 65–70 cm (25–28 in) for the females.
