The Standard Ratzer is a gentle, good-natured, and affectionate animal. They are highly trainable, and can quickly learn new tricks and commands. They are easily adaptable to almost any environment, and love to stay active. They are kind and patient with children, but should always be supervised around small children. The Standard Ratzer is playful, but not overly rambunctious.

The Ratzer dog is a medium to large, sturdy, and muscular dog. It possesses a long, narrow head; a broad, flat skull; and a strong, square muzzle. Its small, erect ears are triangular in shape and lie flat against its head. The medium-sized, oval-shaped eyes are dark and extremely expressive. The nose is broad and wedge-shaped, and the leather is black. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The tail is long, tapering, and covered with short hair. The body is compact, long, and rectangular in shape, and the forequarters and hindquarters are so proportioned that the body appears to be of equal length from fore to rear. The coat is short and smooth, but the legs, neck, and part of the chest are covered by longer hair. The colors are brindle, gray, red, fawn, and black.
