The bulldog became a favorite of wealthy and royal families in Europe, and were frequently shown in heraldry. The bull-baiting pits of England were notorious for the cruelty and brutality they inflicted on animals. It was sometimes difficult to know whether a pit fatality was the result of fights between dogs, or the work of baiting dogs. The introduction of the “bull-and-terrier” is thought to have helped reduce the injuries to the dogs. The descendants of these “bull-and-terrier” fighting dogs are partly credited with giving rise the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. The pit bull type has become the most popular type of fighting dog in the world today.

The American Bull Dogue De Bordeaux is a medium-sized, large breed that generally stands between 26 and 30 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 85 and 130 pounds. They have a rectangular, muscular build with a slightly arched back, a moderately wide head, a defined muzzle, and a strong jaw. The Bull Mastiffs has a flat, broad skull and a thick neck. Their ears are triangular in shape, hanging to either side of the face, and they have short, dark, straight hair. Their tail is thick and tapered, reaching down to the hock, and their hair is rough to the touch. Their skin is loose, and they have small, deep, rounded eyes that are either amber or dark brown in color.
