Chowpit History

The Chow is a Chinese spitz-type mastiff that was originally developed for the purpose of bear-baiting. The Chow is descended from an ancient mastiff-like dog that was indigenous to China. By the late 1700s, the heavily coated and squat appearance of the Chinese mastiff made it a popular target for the sport of bear-baiting. As a result, the chow was created as a smaller, but similar looking, alternative. The modern day Chow descends directly from the Northern Chinese Chow, which was selectively bred from the larger Tibetan Mastiff. The Tibetan Mastiff is still used as a working farm and guard dog in Tibet today.
